Import Regulations in Barbados
There are two ports of entry to Barbados: Bridgetown Harbour and the new Port St. Charles (about ten miles north of Bridgetown). Clearance is easier up in Port St. Charles as it’s non-commercial port.

Customs charges are Bds $25 for clearing in and $25 for out, with an anchoring fee - $8.33 (total: $58.33). Overtime fees are extra and start at 22 p.m.

Clearance charges on exit amount to BDS $100 (US $50) for yachts under 50m. Actual tonnage isn’t important.

Visiting areas outside the Port of Clearance requires permit from Customs and Port Authority, and they will require a copy of the boat’s schedule. At present authorities are reluctant to give you permission to visit other anchorages lying along the west coast of the island. There are plans to open up more cruising areas and marker buoys are being placed at several locations where there are sandy areas big enough to permit anchoring. A chart showing these authorized anchoring areas will eventually be available from the Barbados Port Authority.

Imported ships spares can be transshipped free of duty to the boat under customs oversight.

Registration of private vessels
For the purposes of the Shipping Act a ship is considered “foreign-owned” unless its ownership belongsBarbados citizens or firms incorporated in Barbados, whose beneficial ownership is held entirely by Barbados citizens. A foreign proprietor can hold direct title to a Barbados flag ship, but some foreign proprietors may find it useful to incorporate a Barbados corporation for this purpose.

In 1993 the Barbados Government adopted new shipping legislation that allowed foreign proprietors and nationals to own and man Barbados registered boats, which has culminated in the Shipping Act, 1994 and Shipping (oil pollution) Act 1994.

Barbados Maritime Ship Registry (BMSR) a good open vessel registry headquartered in London with high-quality service. A wide range of internationally owned boats flies the Barbados flag (international tankers, bulk carriers, yachts and containerships). The BMSR offers low initial registration fees, low annual fees and low cost annual Flag State examination.
